The Story Behind the Meme
An Iconic Meme Was Born
On May 1, 2019, the Woman Yelling at Cat meme was born when @MISSINGEGIRL on Twitter paired two images together. On the left is a scene from the "Malibu Beach Party from Hell" episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, showing a tearful Taylor Armstrong being restrained by Kyle Richards. On the right is a photo of a cat named Smudge, seated at a dinner table behind a salad, looking confused.
WYAC Beginnings
The day after the images were paired, the first known Woman Yelling at Cat meme was created by @lc28__ on Twitter. Exactly one month later on June 2, 2019, the first meme was created that put a separate caption above each panel. On the left, someone who is upset and on the right, someone with an indifferent attitude. It wasn’t until June 9th that this meme template was shared on r/memes and Apple-Trump on Reddit created the spider meme to the right which went viral. This was likely the first highly viral WYAC meme.
Virality & Meme of the Year
In the months and years since, the meme has sparked countless variations and remixes. One notable one was created on October 13, 2019, byKucingMenangidwho posted a remix of woman yelling at cat on Facebook. The video swaps out Smudge for Thurston Waffles and brought a live version to the meme which is popular in gifs of the meme today.

As a result of the meme’s widespread popularity, Woman Yelling at Cat won Meme of the Year in 2020 at the Shorty Awards .
A Staple of Internet Culture
This meme took the world by storm and became one of the most viral and recognizable memes to date. It has become an important part of internet culture and is often cited as one of the most well-known memes worldwide. Just last year it had 3 billion impressions. For reference, that is slightly more than Doge. It is loved by all ages and genders, and is used to present day to depict opposing points of view. Below are just a few of the countless variations.

The Woman Yelling at Cat Memecoin
In June 2024, Taylor Armstrong created the WYAC Woman Yelling at Cat™ Memecoin ($WYAC) to celebrate her iconic meme and raise awareness for domestic violence. The token has a total supply of 1,000,000,000 WYAC and lives on the Solana blockchain.

It is unique for Taylor to launch the memecoin herself, as usually, the creator of a memecoin is not the person featured in the meme

WYAC Cares
Our Cause

The yelling half of the Woman Yelling at Cat meme is rooted in a domestic violence situation. That image comes from a scene in the Real Housewives where a castmate was outing Taylor’s DV, putting her in an extremely dangerous situation. Ever since, Taylor has been a champion of the domestic violence cause.

Surprisingly, the meme was not seen as a negative by Taylor when it first emerged. She sees it as an avenue of healing in response to a tragic situation and is proud that the meme has brought joy, light, laughter and creativity to millions of people around the world for the past 5 years.

It is our intent to find appropriate avenues for WYAC™ to support DV victims and survivors.
